August 7th-Broadway on the Aisle

Thirty two neighbors felt they had been given the gift of a lifetime as they enjoyed Thursday evening at the Criterion Theater. The Broadway music was great fun and much more appreciated as many of their children or grandchildren were in the show.

Island Connections would like to thank Joe Cough of the Criterion Theater Board of Directors for providing tickets to allow this group to attend this event.  Many would not have been able to attend if it had not been for the thoughtfulness of Joe and the Criterion. 

Many of our neighbors remembered back “when” the Criterion was just the prime spot for entertainment on an evening out.  The renovations have definitely stepped it up.

August 6th- Music, Tea & Beautiful Gardens

Island Connections neighbors were entertained by Kaveh Haghkerdar playing his magical keyboard. This annual event was held at the Ullikana in the Field. 

Neighbors sat on the patio of the beautiful Ullikana in the Field B&B, owned by the Kasendorf’s. The flowers in a number of gardens were spectacular. Voices filled the air singing all the ‘Old Time Favorites,’ as they sipped lemonade or Ice tea and ate homemade cookies.

A special thanks to our servers and cooks; Dave & Jean Evans and their 2 beautiful grand children Katie and Jack, Joanne Sousa, Leigh Beatty, Jan Varnum, Judy Holmes, Carol Johnston, Enoch Albert and Sharon Knopp.
Roy & Helene Kasendorf we sincerely thank you for hosting this event for the MDI neighbors.  

July 9, 2008 FUN HAT LUNCHEON
Over 98 people attended island Connections “Fun Hat Luncheon” at the Deck House in Southwest Harbor.  Thank you to the MDI YMCA for providing a bus for neighbors’ from Bar Harbor.

Many thanks to Rob Marshall and the Deck House performers for stepping out in grand style to entertain our neighbors as they enjoyed a delicious luncheon. “Speakeasy” was the musical theme and it certainly took many of our neighbors back in time to their favorite music.

Hats! Hats! and more Hats! What a challenge selecting a winner. The grand prizes went to Jerri Small with her giant colonial lace hat adorned with large flowers and Lee Estey with his 2008 Summer Olympics hat. Good food, great laughs and fun was had by all.

June 19th 2008 Summer Exploration trip on the Island Explorer and Picnic
 
80 neighbors from Mount Desert Island and Swans Island learned how to get around MDI on the Island Explorer. John Lawrence, Mount Desert Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, opened the doors of the chamber to allow Island Connections to have the picnic lunch inside on this rainy day.  See photos on Photo Gallery>>>

2008 David P. Evans Memorial Recognition Award Recipient– Carol Johnston

Carol devotes her life to the service of helping others.  She has a personality and a smile that is so infectious it warms your heart.  She is a gift to us all.  She has been a volunteer with Island Connections since 2005.

In 2007 she gave over 300 rides to senior citizens and people with disabilities.  She is an Island Connections Friend to Friend, (checking to make sure Island Neighbor’s are O.K.)  Carol also assists in special Island Connection events and delivers Island wide noontime meals 2 and 3 times a week.

She helps with Bingo at Sonogee and is very involved in her Church, The Church Of Our Father.

Her ability to sense when someone needs to get out for a ride, a shoulder to cry on, or company for lunch demonstrates her compassion and love for others.  She is a lady with many hats, but don’t ask her to cook!
