Our Story
Island Connections began in 1997 as the result of an informal needs assessment performed by The Mount Desert Island Senior Task Force which consisted of multiple agencies and organizations interested in addressing the unmet needs of the underserved and senior population. A $25,000.00 Faith in Action seed grant was awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to establish the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers project for seniors and people with disabilities (be it temporary or permanent), on Mount Desert Island. Volunteers were recruited from area faith congregations to provide basic needs such as transportation, grocery shopping and other services.
Today Island Connections is a very different organization. After almost 30 years of growth, change, and service in the community, transportation remains our top priority. At the start of the COVID pandemic, we limited our transportation services to essential trips for medical appointments and access to food, and launched our own grocery shopping program in which volunteers shop for our neighbors who are unable to go to the store themselves. Since then, the need for our services has skyrocketed. Our volunteers are providing hundreds more trips each year than they did before the pandemic, even with the continued restriction to medical appointments and rides that address food insecurity. In addition to the direct support our volunteers provide, Island Connections delivers meals for the Meals on Wheels program on Mount Desert Island and for MDI Open Table. With greater exposure to our services during the pandemic, we are becoming more recognized as a vital and critical service on MDI.
Island Connections' overall goal is to continue providing free transportation, delivering food to our neighbors, and being recognized in the community as an essential resource. We focus on addressing the many needs surrounding transportation and mobility for seniors and people with disabilities living on Mount Desert Island and the surrounding islands.
It is through the big hearts and generosity of our core group of volunteers that we are able to do this good and much needed work. We always need to recruit additional volunteer drivers to help us meet the needs of so many. Please consider becoming part of the Island Connections family!
Meet Our Team

Carissa Tinker, Executive Director
Carissa grew up on MDI and is happy to have settled back home after some time living away. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Burlington, VT, she decided to stay in the Green Mountain State to study for a master’s degree in Intercultural, Service, Leadership, and Management. Carissa returned to Maine to work as a grassroots organizer and then traveled overseas in order to gain more experience working internationally. She worked as a divemaster in Malaysia, sold solar panels Perth, and painted murals in Mexico. As exciting as those adventures were, she is enjoying staying put. She loves to spend time with her cats, practice graphic design, and watch her garden grow.

Stephanie Babich, Transportation Coordinator
Stephanie Babich is a relative newcomer to Mt Desert Island, having relocated here from Denver Colorado in 2020. Yearning to trade the hectic demands of city life for the quiet charms of small town living, Stephanie was drawn to the area by its warm sense of community, unique culture and history, and stunning yet accessible natural beauty. With a deep background in sales, marketing and logistics Stephanie is pleased to apply skills honed in commerce in new ways with Island Connections, making a direct difference in the lives of others. Stephanie lives in Bar Harbor with her husband and daughter and in her free time she enjoys cooking, long distance walking, amateur photography and exploring the wilds of Acadia. An avid gardener with a true green thumb, on sunny Summer days Stephanie can be found in her garden, tending the flowers and helping things grow.

Kay Keaney, Events and Volunteer Coordinator
Kay Keaney is a creative professional with a degree in interior design and a career that’s spanned design, project management, marketing, event planning, and community outreach. Her work has taken her all over the country, but wherever she’s lived, Kay has been an active voice in the community—volunteering with nonprofits and advocating for causes that support a wide range of local needs. Bar Harbor, however, has always been her heart’s home. She and her family spent time there every year, and in July 2025, Kay and her husband made their stay permanent. Now a full-time resident, Kay is especially passionate about expanding community access to transportation. With two kids off at college, she fills her free time hiking, traveling, sewing, and spoiling their two dogs, who are very happy to be exploring Maine.
